John Byrne is the Research Director for IDC's Wireless and Mobile Infrastructure service. He provides thought leadership and expert analysis on next-generation cellular, WiMAX, and WiFi networks, mobile core and wireless backhaul, and the overarching industry trends driving demand for wireless infrastructure.
Prior to joining IDC in 2011, Mr. Byrne spent several years at Technology Business Research (TBR) where he first served as an analyst before being promoted to Director of the company's Telecom & Networks practice (2007-2011). In this role, Mr. Byrne was responsible for overseeing TBR's syndicated and custom coverage of wireless infrastructure and services vendors and network operators. Areas of focus included the intersection of equipment, services and applications and monetization of emerging operator business models.
Before joining TBR, Mr. Byrne was a wireless analyst at Kagan Research (1999-2005). He covered the U.S. wireless industry and was responsible for writing three leading-edge industry newsletters: Wireless Telecom Investor, Wireless Market Stats and Tower Investor. Mr. Byrne also served as Consultant for Kagan Media Appraisals, providing valuation consulting related to wireless franchises and licenses.
Mr. Byrne is frequently quoted in major trade and business publications, including Fierce Wireless, Wireless Week, Network World and Business Week. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from Boston University, with minors in Economics and International Relations; and earned his J.D. from the University of Baltimore.
