Joe Lawrence is currently the vice president of marketing and public relations for the CDMA Development Group (CDG), a global industry trade association of 150 companies that was founded by Qualcomm to lead the adoption and evolution of CDMA wireless solutions worldwide. He is responsible for leading the advocacy efforts to expand the lucrative revenue stream that is being produced by San Diego’s wireless industry.
Prior to being recruited by the CDG, Joe spent ten years working for Qualcomm, a pioneer in wireless communications. As part of its business development and corporate management team, he was involved in most all aspects of the company and helped build its semiconductor and ancillary businesses across the globe. He was instrumental in expanding the company’s client base from 20 operators in five countries to 240 in more than 100 countries.
Prior to Qualcomm, Joe spearheaded the launching of DIRECTV in Brazil and 12 Latin American countries, and previous to that he worked for the S.E.A. division of SAIC and Data/Ware Development in San Diego.
Joe is an experienced industrialist who has worked within government and private industry within multiple industries; including national defense, ocean engineering, naval architecture, ship building, information, computing and technology, software development, entertainment and telecommunications. He has traveled extensively across the globe, to more than 50 countries, developing new business. He has experience in export and regulatory affairs.
Over the past thirty years, he has developed strong personal relationships with many captains of industry. He served on the San Diego and Imperial County District Export Council for several years.
Joe is an Eagle Scout, U.S. naval academy graduate, certified as a professional engineer (P.E.) and holds an MBA in Finance. He is trilingual in English, Spanish and Portuguese. He has lived abroad in Mexico, Spain and Brazil. He retired as a captain from the U.S. Navy after twenty five years of honorable service as a nuclear submarine officer and naval reservist.
Joe resides in Rancho Bernardo with his wife, Néia, from Brazil. They have four children.
